Rural Work Ethic Curbs Elderly Heart Care

Research study at University of Alberta ,shows a strong work ethic and sense of place appear to influence how elderly rural Albertans with congestive heart failure manage their illness, in that these values may delay them from seeking help at critical times. .

Child care trends

As baby boomers age and women with young children return to the work force, families are increasingly turning to paid workers to care for children and elderly parents and grandparents.

Yet those direct care and child care workers receive low wages, change jobs often, lack health insurance, and live in low-income families at a greater rate than all female workers, according to a new policy brief by the Carsey Institute at the University of New Hampshire.

"The large-scale movement of women into the paid labor market has brought sweeping change to the structure of family life, affecting who cares for the elderly and children. Today, our society depends, in part, on the caring work of many paid professionals," says Kristin Smith, family demographer at the Carsey Institute and co-author of the brief.

We must have a soul, new leader tells party

Gordon Brown's speech yesterday was 13 years in the making, but harked back more than 50, to his boyhood. Around the nuggets of policy came personal reflections on his upbringing, beliefs and values - on the "soul" which should be at the heart of his party.

In one of his stronger speeches to Labour, he attempted to resolve the paradox which faces him: to build on the government's successes, while offering a new start which can tempt both the party's base and the swing voters flirting with the Conservatives. Like Tony Blair before him, he suggested that only by changing can Labour remain true to its values.
